Have you ever considered the human need for conversation? From infancy, your parents taught you how to use language and, once you were proficient in its use, you could enter into relationship with others. From then on, all of your relationships were built on conversation. In order to get to know others, you had to laugh, joke, argue, and cry with them. Prayer is conversation with God. Since God is a person, you can know him better or worse depending on how much time you spend listening to, and speaking with, him. Prayer places you in the presence of your Creator, a presence that will bring you a peace of soul and spirit. As you develop your prayer relationship with God, you begin to realize that all of your desires are satisfied in friendship with him. In prayer, God calls you by name and invites you to share your joys and sorrows with him. In short, a prayer relationship with God moves you to say with Saint Augustine, “Our heart is restless until it rests in thee, O God."

While time wasted in conversation with God may come at a cost to your personal or professional time, the immeasurable peace and fulfillment experienced in prayer will prove to be the best use of your time on this earth.
