Alex first used the title “because I said I would” at his father’s funeral because his dad always did what he said he would do.
Who does Jesus’ sayings challenge us to include in the family of God?
Jesus’ sayings challenge us to include all people in the family of God—to respect kids we don’t like, to make conflicts better rather than worse, to pay attention to ways we need to grow up and change, and to love others the same way we want them to love us.
What did Jesus mean when he said, “People speak from what is in their hearts”?
Jesus meant that our actions come from what’s in our hearts, so we need to keep our hearts pure in order to be good.
What is transubstantiation?
Transubstantiation is the complete change that occurs at the Consecration at Mass when the substance of the bread is changed into the substance of the Body of Christ, and the substance of the wine is changed into the substance of the Blood of Christ.

Sunday Readings
Old Testament: Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18
Psalm 27:1, 7-8, 8-9, 13-14
New Testament: Philippians 3:17 – 4:1 or 3:20 – 4:1
Gospel: Luke 9:28b-36
Scripture Background
This Sunday’s Gospel is about the Transfiguration, when Jesus was transformed as he prayed and appeared in dazzling glory, accompanied by the prophets Moses and Elijah. The Apostles Peter, John, and James were witnesses to this event.
The Transfiguration can be understood as an event about vision, about seeing the glory of Jesus. But allowing our eyes to be opened to a deeper “seeing” of Jesus can be a transformative experience. If we let this new insight take root in our hearts, it can change us and strengthen our commitment to Jesus. It can help us know Jesus more deeply and see his presence in our lives.
Connecting Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church
Even some of Jesus’ most faithful followers had trouble truly seeing him at times. (See, for example, John 21:1–14, for the account of the Apostle Peter when Jesus appeared to the disciples on the shore of Galilee.)
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church
The Catechism of the Catholic Church speaks of the “mysteries” of Christ’s life, emphasizing the difficulty of knowing and understanding all that Jesus is.
Yet the Catechism also tells us that, “Christ’s whole earthly life—his words and deeds, his silences and sufferings, indeed his manner of being and speaking—is Revelation of the Father” (CCC, 516).
If we open our hearts and minds, Christ will make himself known to us more fully.
